Introducing our beautiful antique-style, Artist’s Watercolour Book:
Like all artists, I love to acquire and use beautiful media and I designed this book from a soul that savours these small pleasures.
I can picture my favourite artists and illustrators of Yesteryear with this book; artists such as Beatrix Potter, Alfred Munnings, John Tenniel and Eric Ravillious. I can hear the light scuff of a pencil over a page, the musical rattle of a brush washed in a water jar, I can almost taste the delicious colour, skilfully mopped across the paper… Who do you see using it?
Slightly larger than A4 and landscape in format, it is both substantial and elegant. It’s large enough to be inspirational and small enough to be portable, perfect for both the studio and plein air. The finished size is approximately 315mm x 225mm x 20mm.
It has 96 pages of quality, acid-free, 225gsm ‘Not’ finish, Dutch watercolour paper – a surface suitable for all wet and dry media including watercolour, pencil, charcoal, ink, marker, acrylic and oil.
The pages have a deliberate pre-industrial aesthetic, with hand torn edges and sawtooth fore edge which means no trimming of the bookblock is required. It is hard bound in a ledger style with a rounded spine – this allows it to open fully flat and it has self-endpapers – perfect for swatching your colour palette on the inside of the clovers. The covering is a traditional half-binding with the spine and protective corners in book cloth. The sidings are glorious, English marbled paper. It is the small but significant attention to detail such as coordinated headbands that make this sketchbook appeal to the epicurean in each of us.
This version of our Watercolour Artist’s Sketchbook Kit doesn’t contain any tools or equipment, meaning that if you already have a selection of craft tools at home you don’t need to double-up on items like cutting mats, rulers, scissors etc. If however you think you might like to go for the version that contains all of the high quality tools as well as the materials required to make this book, you can view it here: Complete Bookbinding Kit: Artist’s Watercolour Sketchbook.

This is a well put together kit that provides detailed step-by-step instructions on how to create your own watercolour sketchbook.
This was a much more challenging project (compared to the ‘starter bookbinding kit’) and it took me almost 2 days to complete. You do have to give yourself a lot of time and space to work on the project, however, it is very absorbing.
The instructions are extremely thorough, and I didn’t feel lost at any stage. Being able to go back and re-read the instructions and zoom into the photographs is really useful.
There is an excruciating wait of approx. 2 weeks (not compulsory!) as you have to leave the book under a pile of heavy books to dry, but the end-product is well worth the wait. I felt a real sense of achievement when I held the finished project in my hand.
I would really recommend this to everyone.
